I want to get my master's degree in IT at an online school? What school and/or program, do you suggest

I want to get my master's degree in IT at an online school? What school and/or program, do you suggest?
Hi...I have a B.A. in Psychology that I attained from Oral Roberts University in 2003. I have been working in the field of social services for the last 6 years. I do not want to further my education in anything related to social services (i.e. counseling, therapist, etc). I would like to pursue a Master's in something under the umbrella of IT. I also am looking to go online for school as I work full time and I just don't want to have to go to a traditional school if I don't have to. I have done a semester online at ITT Tech a couple of years ago and enjoyed the online experience. I was working on an Associate's in Computer Forensics. I actually am highly fascinated with this field so I would like to pursue it at the graduate level. In the master's arena, it is not usually called Computer Forensics however. I also am interested in learning how to program different applications on the computer. What program would encompass computer security AND computer programming (software engineering)? I have been debating between a few online colleges: (1)Kaplan (which has a Master of Science in Information Technology with a concentration in Information Security and Assurance). (2)University of Phoenix has a Master of Information Systems. This one is kind of broad but does have courses in information security and computer programming. (3) Virginia College has a Master of Science in Cybersecurity. This one is very specific and no computer programming courses. (4) Keller Graduate School of Management has a Master of Information Systems Management with a concentration in Information Security. Lastly, (5) AIU has a Master of Information Technology with a concentration in Internet security. Now, these are just the colleges that I have researched and I have spoken with the academic advisors and am considering attending (I've actually researched a few more but for whatever reason, I eliminated them). Out of the 5 online schools that I mentioned, are there any that you would personally not consider and why?? I have heard good stories and I have heard horror stories. All 5 of the schools I mentioned are accredited. Can you offer any other colleges or programs for that matter that may be a better fit that I can look into based off of the information that I have given you about myself?? I know I've written a lot of information. I just feel like the academic advisors at these specific schools are biased and I would love an unbiased point of view Also, let me add this one last thing as a sidenote, I used to work with therapists as the case worker for sexually abused children. Our agency worked alongside the police department, sheriff's department, district attorney's office, etc., etc. This is when I really became involved in computer forensics, because I would love to know how to go into a suspect's computer and recover lost data that they think they erased (i.e. a pedophile with child pornography) and that is what the degree should provide for me. And as I said earlier, I would also like to know how to actually program applications or software on the computer that can be used in that field or even in other unrelated fields. Please help...I am trying to make a decision by the end of the year with hopes of starting school in early 2010. I know I've said a lot and have written a book but this is actually the narrowed down version since I first started this process.... Thank you for your input..."

All of the schools you mention are worthless. Their degrees are worthless. You will be laughed-at if you try to get a job with one of these degrees. It's hard to advise you. You clearly are romantically involved with this bogus concept of "cyber IT" and you're not going to be talked out of it. If you were to do it right, you would get a flexible Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering Technology.

2
Here is what I am concerned about that I am sure will make it difficult for you to find a job. Your undergraduate degree is not related to the IT career field. If you did attend an online graduate program, you will have practicaly no hands-on experience with computers and networks, except for maybe your own personal computer at home. When you are competing for jobs with others who have IT graduate degrees from schools that required attendance and have the practical hands-on experience with different types of computers and networks, guess who will get hired first? When I was studying Information Systems and Computer Programming, about half of the time I spent at school was in the computer labs getting very important hands-on experience with different types of equipment. Being familiar with equipment that is being used by businesses will help you get hired much quicker. Even when I was studying engineering, my labs allowed me to become familiar with and use expensive equipment that I would never have access to by studying online. When I obtained my second college degree, I did it attending school part-time while working full-time. You can do this also. You expressed an interest in computer forensics. Why not study to get certified as a CHFI (Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator)? http://www.ucertify.com/certifications/EC-Council/chfi.html

I'm thinking of getting my master's in MIS, anybody know about that degree

I'm thinking of getting my master's in MIS, anybody know about that degree?
Do you think it's going to be really useful in about 3 years? I'm a senior getting my B.S. in Economics soon, but I already have 3 years of experience in IT, so I figure I should set my career in that direction (instead of finance / investment). Masters in Information Technology Management / Consulting at University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) is specifically what I'm asking about. Thanks in advance for any advice at all!!

Well, I'm not an expert with the MIS degree, but I think there is a BIG difference between MIS and IT. You should research what MIS is before you actually set forth the money to get the degree. Sorry, I don't have any personal experience. http://som.utdallas.edu/graduate/graduate_ms_itm_degree_plan.htm Here is a wiki on MIS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Management_information_systems

What degree to programmer employers seek in a candidate? Information technology or Computer Science

What degree to programmer employers seek in a candidate? Information technology or Computer Science?
I am interested in pursuing a career as a software engineer. I am deciding between a graduate program for a Masters Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology. Please see these two programs. http://cs.kutztown.edu/programs.asp and http://www.edinboro.edu/cwis/Math-CS/it/masters.html These are the only two PA State schools with grad programs in CS/IT. IUP has one as well, but I do not want to go there. I have a BA in Speech Communications, and have no formal training in CS. I have e-mailed the department chair of the program at KU. He suggested me to take 7 undergrad courses for me to enter the Masters program. They're program is arranged where I could concentrate my studies on programming. Would I be more marketable if i had an MSIT?

I have a bachelor degree in computer science and I have worked in IT for over 14 years. I enjoy what I do but I wished when I was yonger and had more spare time to pursue a master degree in computer or an MBA. So, yes take that master!!! You will benefit a lot in your career.

2
My employer goes only for Computer Science.

3
I personally do not hire anyone at all with a MS in a computer related field with an unrelated BS. I have seen this turn into a disaster too many times to count when I have been unable to convince others not to hire these people for their departments. They have no useful skills whatsoever. I once had to work with a person who didn't have enough practical computer skills to be a secretary, let alone a Software Engineer. If you have a BS in a computer related field or EE, and an MS in a computer related then you can go right to the top of the pile, because I know you are serious about what you want to do. But with two unrelated degrees, straight into the trash.

There is a big difference between Master in Information Technology and Master in Information Management. The former requires a good insight of technology, software, hardware and the application aspects of the technoloy. While the second one is more focussed on Information Management, designing systems and processes to collect, filter and analyze data to produce useful reports that can be used by the people in decision making positions to assess their tasks. However, a good understanding of computer systems, software, various availaible technologies and their utilitiy value are pre-requisite in either case. It is your Individual coice and your Computer Engineering degree will help you in both the courses. A good way would be to take a look at the top US colleges that offer Masters Program in Information Technology and Information management fields and then review their course structures - along with the kind of Jobs that the students get after they complete their studies. I found the following webpage with a good collection of colleges that offer computer engineering programs in US http://www.accesseducationindia.com/top-computers-engineerings-courses.html There are several other websites that provide the list of courses and colleges too.

I don't have the answer to this question but I would like to know one to. The school I am going to only offers a master's in I.T. with a concentration in Internet Security and Project Management. I am looking for one with a concentration in Computer Forensics, or Network Administration. So you might want to be specific in which field you want to go into with I.T.

What kinds of jobs can I get with a MS in Business Information Technology?
I have my undergraduate degree in Business Management. I have 5 years experience as a financial clerk with the federal government and I am presently looking for another job that is better suited to use my education. In the fall, I will work full time and go part time to get my masters of science in business information technology. My question is do you think I am going down the right path for a decent job in the future by obtaining that degree?

What is the best way to land a federal job on the Information Technology field

What is the best way to land a federal job on the Information Technology field?
Currently I am reading some books on how to prepare resumes for federal jobs. I looked in usajob.opm.gov for jobs and apply, but I always seem to not even get called (not pass the first screening). I currently have a bachelors degree in Information Technology, planning on getting my master starting on march 23 and hold 4 comptia certifications (will get some microsoft ones soon). What am I doing wrong? I understand that many people prefer to work in the states and I am looking at overseas jobs. I forgot to mention that I served in the U.S. Navy for 7 years, so I have veterans preference. Check my online portfolio at http://www.prnetcom.com/portfolio/index.html and let me know what i might be doing wrong. My resume is in there too.

Bill Gates went before Congress and said his firm has 3,000 unfilled jobs. Mr. Bill wants H1-B visa workers. Join the Army, serve your time in infantry, relist and get cert and prefs for government.

2
Experience is usually the entry criteria...unless specified otherwise. Book learning and certifications are proof that you are capable of learning, but unless you have been there, you are untested and untrained.

3
Or you can hack some federal dept and get arrested...then the Men In Black walk in and offer you a job....lets face it you need to give more detail than what you have...IT Support, Network, Dbase, Coding. Management what is it that you are after.... Then have a look at why your resume is failing...all govt have hte same process to follow when selecting people it is about RISK management...if you are not being accepted it is because you are seen as to HIGH a RISK as opposed to others.....

4
I looked at your site. The first sentence (on the scrolling welcome part) has quite a number of grammar mistakes. Also, you show a lot of pride in being from Puerto Rico, which is awesome because it's a beatiful place and being from there is something to be proud of...but if you are showing this to people while looking for a job in the federal government, that type of local pride is going to backfire on you. Even more so than if you had a flag of a state rather than a territory on your profile, but for the same reason: they are looking for Americans! with a capital A and exclamation mark. Emphasize "what you have done for your country" and why you want to continue serving it.

How's the Master of Liberal Arts in Information Technology from Harvard Extension School

How's the Master of Liberal Arts in Information Technology from Harvard Extension School?
I need some information and feedback on Master of Liberal Arts in Information Technology from Harvard University Extension School. Any insights on the overall experience, does the text Master of Liberal Arts in Extension studies with concentration in Information Technology viewed by HR and prospective employers? How does that compare with other continuing schools and programs around Boston like the Brandeis University MS in IT Management and the Boston University's M.S in Computer Information Systems. ALM in IT from Harvard Extension School vs MS in IT and M.S in CIS, the name Harvard is indeed something to recon with but not the text on the diploma. Any insights on this?

Boston-area employers don't view an HES degree as the same as a Harvard degree. If the only reason why you're looking at this program is because of the Harvard name, then look elsewhere. In addition, a master in liberal arts... I'm not loving that type of degree re: employment prospects. It's not the same as a masters in IT, a masters in CIS, etc. It's less focused. Employers in your field prefer the focus. BU has a very good rep in the IT field. Brandeis does as well. I also know that Northeastern and WPI (which has a campus on 128) both have respected masters IT-related degrees.

idk man if you spent all that time 4yrs for a bachelors and all that money? that would suck...if you really enjoy it and know what your doing keep @ it....swallow your pride and work your way up from the bottom. If you do enjoy the work go for your certifications..obviously if you get certified you will be resected and show to employers you know what your doing....you already have the degree requirments so now get some work experience doing w/e related to it and then get certified to show employers and not to mention they pay you more for having them.. IT careers are booming now a days, but i feel you I will have an associates in IT security and dont know much about it due to bad schooling..i have a 2.87 and will continue to go for bachelors pretty much all over in the IT security feild because i only got 36credits to transfer..but ithink thats a good thing..fresh start..will hopefully have teachers teaching

You should consider a Masters in Health Information Mgt. from the College of St. Scholastica (Minnesota), its a online degree and while the college itself is not Harvard.... their HIM program is the absolute best in the field..in the nation. Very respectable program. The University of Pittsburgh also has a Masters HIM program but it is on-campus. These are the only two accredited programs in the world! They also have certificate programs but in order to become a registered HIM professional you have to go to an accredited program and complete it in full. Visit www.ahima.com they have a link to education there. For more info on HIM visit www.himss.com . Good luck

Most of the time in the IT and related fields a degree only means getting the interview scheduled with HR. After that is totally reliant upon the experience gained in the related field(s). Depending on his experience he may be able to start out as an entry level Administrator or maybe even score a management level type job. However, remember it is dependent on what he did in Brazil. Also, what is he interested in? Network design? Databases? Software design? Graphic design? End user support? That will have a big effect on where he goes.

They cannot small talk/have similar interests (golf, manufacturing, marketing) like people in other divisions within a company.

Define better... higher initial salary long term career stability personal happiness in a profession ability to make your name, potential for fame stability Seriously, there are so many factory how can anyone on here give you a serious answer as to which would "fit" you better? You know yourself. We do not. We're strangers. The best suggestion I can do is to brainstorm. This is when you take a piece of paper and just write anything that comes to your mind about the two options. After you've brainstormed a bunch of ideas, put them into categories, and see which option has the most positives and which the most negatives. "Know thyself." (Old Greek saying)

Depending on the depth of your IT background, you could have a promising career as a technical coordinator for transportation/logistics. What this includes is finding out how technology can be used for your company, determining the hardware/software costs, determining the functional capacity of the hardware/software, integrating the hardware/software, and managing the installation and maintenance of the hardware/software. This really makes your title a roving one. In this capacity, you will transition from a project coordinator to a project manager to a technical manager of some sort. The only problem is convincing the company that they need this level of technology and someone to manage it.

You need to shoot for a doctoral degree program in clinical psychology if you want to do counseling. If you just want to do psychology research then you still need to do a doctoral degree but it need not be in clinical psych. Although psych grad programs take people outside of psychology majors, the majority are bio or other scientific majors who come from programs that emphasize research. Hence, your undergrad degree wouldn't really impressive anyone and likely make it difficult to do unless you spend some time doing undergrad work in psych classes first. If you want to do counseling, you may want to consider social work. MSW programs will allow you to counsel and are far shorter and easier to complete than clinical psych programs.

The only thing the Bachelors needs to do is satisfy the required,s to enter the Master's program. these things are easy to learn. you're going for it at same school so it's all there. two things 1. required's for master's program 2. there may be some subjects that require a specific text be used in the required (like marketing 101 uses a specific text-cause marketing 201 refers to that text info-and if you didn't use that text you would not have been exposed to the info. these questions are all easily answered at the registers office. if specific courses are required it will note that. yeah, it's very doable

Yes, somewhat. Computer science deals with the theory behind it all and programming. IT deals with putting it all together to do work.

What master program combines Business Strategy with Information Technology

What master program combines Business Strategy with Information Technology?
I'm a graduate from a business school, and I'm interested in strategic management. However, I am quite good with computers and i have a BIT degree. So, is there a masters program that combines the two fields; something like Strategic R&D maybe. Thanks in advance

Why go for your masters when you have a great bachelors degree?? IT is in demand now, don't wait two-three years and when maybe IT grads wont be in so much demand or it might be more competitive. Plus you get a job after you receive your bachelors, and the company you work for might pay for you to go back to school(for your masters). This might not matter if you have scholarships, but if you don't this is a big deal. I hear more and more of people going straight to get their masters after just receiving your bachelors. Which, IMO, is really unnecessary unless your going to be a doctor/architect or in some field that requires a masters degree. Also, real world experience will help you in grad school. If you go straight into grad school what experience do you have outside of books and lectures?

2
I agree with the first answer completely. You should work for a couple of years then decide if you still want to pursuit an advance degree in computing. Maybe the choice will be MBA, audit or who knows what else is possible. Also the quality of your advance study would be greatly improved once you have real world experience. Your way of thinking and skills in developing opinion are greatly sharpen with work experience. Having said, if you are looking for more training in networking maybe professional certification is more appropriate. Microsoft and Cisco both offer certification programs and not to mention certificates will add great deal of value to your resume (more so than MS at this time in your career). If you have to continue study for visa purpose, then I would suggest IT forensic, audit and network security. Best wishes.

Try Universitatea „Lucian Blaga” Sibiu. They have a master's program, apparently in English. Not the best university in Romania, but it's not the worst either. Their site: http://stiinte.ulbsibiu.ro/ Also, check out: http://www.credis.ro/ It's the first time I've heard of them, but they seem to have the master you're interested in. Go here for Universitatea Transilvania Brasov: http://webyn.unitbv.ro/Default.aspx?alias=webyn.unitbv.ro/en They have some masters, although I'm not sure if any of them is what you're looking for. I couldn't find anything at the "big" universities either (Bucuresti, Timisoara, Cluj, Iasi, Craiova).

1) Hold off on PhD because it may not be worth it if you go into the field that doesn't require that. I would wait, it'll always be there. 2) What if you went into business development for a hospital, hospice, clinic of some sort? Operations manager, technology specialist for a hospital, nursing home, etc. That will get you in the door to find various desired positions. See if you like technology or business in healthcare better. If you do that in a healthcare setting it may open up views that you like and dislike about the two sides. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Congratulations! I would suggest that you find the state that you want to go to school in. Each state has a university system. Do research on that state, and find a list the schools that are available. Get the admission requirments, and make contact with the university(s). They will help you along with the process. Good luck, and have fun!

I did the same undergrad and masters, and I went with a PhD in Instructional Technology. My other choice was to do MIS. If I had to do it again, I think I'd go with the PhD in MIS, but for my specific situation, it has worked out well to do Instructional Technology.

Should I get an MBA or Masters in Information Technology Management

Should I get an MBA or Masters in Information Technology Management?
Here's my background. I was in the Air Force and fixed a military computer system for nine years (not PCs). I also worked communications systems for a year. I got out, took a few programming and calculus classes, but ended up getting my degree in biology. I am going to the Army as an officer and plan to work in signals, which is their IT division. I would be getting this degree through Webster in a coop program they have with the military. Which degree would open me up to the better career in the civilian world?

Probably the ITM. The need for this is growing extremely rapidly. An MBA is a general degree, while the ITM is much more specialized and is more in tune with what you are doing and expect to do. Regards, Dan

2
I would choose MBA. You can use that for any field you go into in the future. ITM limits you, and doesn't really give you a leg up on anyone else. Your experience and knowledge matter more than the degree in the IT field. If you want to end up in administration and management, go with the MBA.

3
Probably the MBA You already have a lot of experience. The MBA is a general degree designed to train student to enter any area of management. Most MBA programs accept students with any undergraduate degree. The MBA is in contrast to the MS degree which trains students to reach higher levels of knowledge in their specialty so that they can serve as better staff and researchers, with no intention of becoming high level managers. Consult the Official MBA Guide, a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, etc), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. It's the best service available at http://officialmbaguide.org.

Bachelor of Nursing going to Masters of Information Technology

Bachelor of Nursing going to Masters of Information Technology?
I have graduated from Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Afterwards, is it possible to take Masters in Information Technology? Even if the bachelors degree is not related to the masters degree? or do I have to take up another Bachelors degree for information technology from scratch? I'm asking this because bachelors is too long, 4 hours. While masters is only 2 years, which I prefer. Thank you so much for your help. :) I mean bachelors is 4 years, while masters is only 2 years.

I doubt it you can jump from nursing to IT. I suspect you will have to take up another Bachelors degree in and IT related subject to progress onto the masters. It does depend on the university though.

2
I think you have to first take few subjects related to IT and then YOU CAN SHIFT YOUR FIELD FROM MEDICAL TO IT....

3
Find a university at which the general courses (english, history, math, sciences, phys ed, etc) of your nursing degree will transfer to satisfy the first two years of their bachelor in IT. Then go for only two years to satisfy the requirements of their bachelors in IT. You will not be allowed to enroll in any 2 year masters program in IT with an unrelated bachelors degree that I've ever heard of. Some grad schools may set you up on a three year course of study to get their Masters in IT, while others will require you to get your bachelors first. UT Knoxville, for example, offers a three year masters degree in Architecture for those with an unrelated bachelors degree. An outside shot is if some university offers a two year "health science" IT masters degree - to qualify those with health science bachelor's degrees to work in IT jobs in hospitals. If such a program exists somewhere, it would probably be at a university that also has a med school like Vanderbilt. There is no point in getting an associates in IT when you already have the first two years worth of courses for most bachelors in IT completed already. If you just want to get out of nursing - you could probably get a job at a drug company. My sister was a nurse and now flies around the country for a drug company monitoring the research the doctors are doing with their drugs. She makes six figures and didn't have to go back to school. If you do go back to school, try to get into an internship so you'll have a job when you graduate - there would be nothing worse than spending all that time and money on a second degree and then not be able to find someone who would give you a chance to do it.

"assistive technology" is emerging as a speciality field - the concept is to connect people with disabilities to technology (be it "high-tech," like computers, or "low-tech," like an automatic can opener). You see a lot of assistive technology in the home makeover shows that feature accommodations for people with special needs. Computer networking itself may not tie-in with the disability field, but there are numerous software programs out there that help people with hearing impairments, speech impairments, and even people with limited mobility (through devices such as headpointers that integrate with touchscreens). If your husband is interested in such a thing, he could look into assistive technology programs - every state has one - and the vocational rehabilitation offices to see if he could become a counselor. The pay isn't necessarily top-tier, but it could be very rewarding.

3
Wow, your husband is set up for a great career! The two fast-growing fields for the next 10 years are the medical and computer fields (in spite of out-sourcing) and networking and working with databases are the hottest of the computer jobs. Any organization dealing with medical services would love to hire someone who understood their specific field, instead of hiring someone who only understands computers or business in general, like typical graduates and people in the computer field (like me!). 1) Medical and health services managers need to have business and medical backgrounds: A bachelor’s degree is adequate for some entry-level positions in smaller facilities, at the departmental level within health care organizations, and in health information management. Graduates with bachelor’s degrees in health administration usually begin as administrative assistants or assistant department heads in larger hospitals. They also may begin as department heads or assistant administrators in small hospitals or nursing care facilities. Median annual earnings of medical and health services managers were $67,430 in May 2004. Here's the US Dept of Labor's info about the career: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos014.htm 2) The computer field isn't too keen on advanced degrees unless you want to teach at a college or want to go into high management. He could be a computer network analyst, later a networking manager, or a computer systems analyst. Here's a link to the US Dept of Labor's list of these computer professions ( once you click on a title, you'll see the job description, requirements and outlook): http://www.bls.gov/oco/oco1002.htm Good luck!

I am pursuing a Bachelor's in Information Technology from University of South Florida. I am then considering getting a Master's in Management. My goal is to lead an IT team or better yet, organization. Is getting this Master's degree going to be a value-add? Is it viewed by the industry as worth while? The last thing I want to get is a very expensive piece of paper that provided no additional value. Any thoughts?

Well, the IT field is vastly overcrowded as it is. There are hundreds of applicants for every IT job that opens up. I don't think a Master's in 'Management' would make you stand out. What WOULD make you stand out is job experience.
